Lufthansa modernizes A320 for short- and medium-haul operations

Airbus A320 Retrofit – more comfort on short- and medium-haul routes with Lufthansa
At the beginning of March 2026, Lufthansa announced a large-scale modernization program for its Airbus A320 fleet, aimed at significantly improving passenger comfort on short- and medium-haul routes. By 2029, a total of 38 aircraft will be fully retrofitted, receiving an entirely new passenger cabin along with a range of amenities designed to meet modern traveler expectations.
Modern and more comfortable seats
One of the key elements of the upgrade is the introduction of new ergonomic seats designed to provide greater long-distance comfort. They offer improved body support and a noticeably higher level of comfort compared to the current seating.
In addition, horizontally adjustable headrests allow passengers to better adapt the seat to their individual needs. In Business Class, an increased recline angle has been introduced, further enhancing comfort during flights.

More space for carry-on baggage
A significant change is the completely redesigned overhead storage bins. The new bins are approximately 40% larger than the previous ones, allowing for easier storage of a greater number of cabin suitcases.
The new design enables vertical baggage placement, which not only increases capacity but also streamlines the boarding process. Passengers can store their belongings more quickly and conveniently, reducing boarding time.
Features for mobile devices
All seats will be equipped with USB-A and USB-C ports, allowing passengers to conveniently charge electronic devices during the flight. In addition, each seat will feature a holder for tablets or smartphones, making it easier to use personal devices for watching movies, series, or working onboard.
Scope of the retrofit and project logistics
The retrofit program includes around 1,000 components supplied by nearly 100 different vendors. Each aircraft will undergo the modernization process in approximately 30 days, requiring precise operational planning to minimize disruption to flight schedules.
The Airbus A320 fleet modernization represents an important step toward standardizing comfort across Lufthansa’s network. With new seats, larger overhead bins, and modern mobile device amenities, passengers can expect a significantly improved travel experience even on short-haul routes.
