All Nippon Airways: A New Level of Business Class with “THE Room FX”

ANA: Debut of Supersized “THE Room FX” Seats
All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline and a five-star Skytrax carrier for 12 consecutive years, has unveiled a new generation of business class seats – “THE Room FX.” The debut took place during the 55th International Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, at the Safran Seats booth.
The new seats have been designed specifically for Boeing 787-9 aircraft and – as ANA emphasizes – are the largest business class seats in their category on mid-sized aircraft. Each seat features a private suite with a door, providing passengers with maximum comfort and privacy.
The First Major Upgrade in a Decade
“THE Room FX” will be introduced on ANA aircraft starting in 2026, initially on long-haul international routes. It will mark the first business class seat refresh in the airline’s mid-sized fleet in ten years.
The new product builds on the concept known from the iconic “THE Room” seats installed on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, offering a similar level of luxury with additional, enhanced features tailored to the Dreamliner cabin.
A Joint Project by ANA, Safran Seats and Acumen
The project is the result of collaboration between:
- Safran Seats – one of the world’s leading aircraft seat manufacturers,
- Acumen – a British design studio,
- ANA – as the initiator and owner of the product concept.
“ANA continues to invest in the future of the most advanced and comfortable air travel. The THE Room FX seat reflects our commitment to exceeding passenger expectations and shaping the future of luxury flight,” said Tomoji Ishii, Executive Vice President, Customer Experience at ANA.
“FX” – Future Experience
The FX abbreviation stands for Future Experience and refers to a new, flexible design philosophy. The main objective was to create a seat that:
offers more personal living space, allows multiple relaxation positions, and provides one of the largest sleeping surfaces in the business class market.
Thanks to a simplified mechanism, passengers can easily transition from a seated position to a “sofa” configuration and then into a full-flat bed.
Comfort and Space Optimization
The new cabin has been optimized for the Boeing 787’s interior thanks to:
- thinner private suite doors and partitions,
- curved backrest lines,
- an alternating forward- and rear-facing seat layout.
The result? A spatial experience comparable to that of a larger aircraft cabin, while maintaining world-class comfort.
Modern Technology and Functionality
Compared to the current business class seats on the Boeing 787-9, “THE Room FX” offers:
a significantly wider seat, a monitor 40% larger, a large side console for personal items, USB-C ports, wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity for headphones, and an adjustable leg rest that allows for personalized space configuration.
Luxury Paired with Sustainability
Despite their larger dimensions, the new seats are no heavier than the existing ones. The use of thinner doors, backrests and dividers has significantly reduced overall weight, positively impacting fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.
A New Standard in Business Class
“THE Room FX” is another step by ANA toward redefining business class on long-haul routes. As project partners emphasize, the new seat combines comfort, flexibility and elegant engineering, setting new standards in the premium segment.
