Kraków: new airport terminal to handle 19 million passengers

The expansion of the passenger terminal at Kraków-Balice Airport is entering a crucial phase. The airport has launched a tender for a new facility that will be able to handle nearly 19 million travelers a year. The investment responds to the rapid increase in passenger traffic – the airport is already operating at the limits of its capacity.

Why does Kraków need a bigger terminal?

In 2024, Kraków Airport served 11 million passengers. In 2025, the number may reach 13 million. The current terminal, however, was designed for a maximum of 12 million travelers per year. Airport authorities emphasize that investment plans had to be accelerated to keep up with demand.

What will the new terminal look like?

The expansion will extend the building westward and connect it with the existing structure. The plan includes two phases: the first to be completed in 2029, and the entire project finalized in 2031.

The new section, called T6, will have four levels – including one underground – and will add around 44,500 m² of usable space. Once finished, the entire terminal complex will cover more than 120,000 m².

After the first stage, capacity will rise to around 16 million passengers per year. Upon completion, the figure is expected to reach 19 million.

Infrastructure details

  • 11 new boarding gates
  • peak-hour throughput of 4,400 passengers
  • a new baggage claim hall
  • additional passport control areas for non-Schengen travelers: 32 desks and 10 e-gates for arrivals, and 22 desks and 10 e-gates for departures

These upgrades aim to make travel outside Europe faster and more convenient.

When will the tender and construction begin?

The tender will be announced on September 22. Bids from contractors can be submitted until November 13. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026.

Board member Janusz Kardasiński explained that previous plans underestimated passenger demand. Airport CEO Łukasz Strutyński added that the expansion will not only increase capacity but also ensure comfort for travelers and secure Kraków’s position among the fastest-growing airports in Europe.
