Kraków Airport Embarks on a New Stage of Development – Former Cargo Terminal to Be Transformed into Passenger Waiting Area
A significant chapter in the modernization of Kraków Airport is about to begin. The airport’s management has signed a contract with Mostostal Warszawa SA to convert the former cargo terminal into a temporary pre-boarding area for passengers traveling to non-Schengen destinations. The total value of the investment is PLN 28.6 million (gross), and the project is scheduled for completion within nine months.
The revamped facility will serve as a Pre-Boarding Zone Non-Schengen, featuring six additional departure gates. This space will be dedicated to passengers waiting to board their flights, offering a more comfortable and efficient experience during peak travel times.
– The development of Kraków Airport is part of a carefully structured plan. We are entering a crucial first phase of a broader modernization strategy – said Łukasz Strutyński, President of the Management Board of Kraków Airport. – The adaptation of the former cargo terminal into a temporary waiting zone lays the groundwork for the next stages of expansion – he added.
The scope of the project includes demolition and reconstruction works, interior redesign tailored to the PBZ function, construction of a connecting corridor to the main terminal, two new staircases, and modernization of utility systems and the building’s surroundings.
This phase is just one element of a long-term vision. In the coming years, Kraków Airport plans to expand the passenger terminal on both the western and eastern sides. The entire redevelopment is expected to be completed by 2031, with the goal of increasing the airport’s capacity to 19 million passengers annually.
For Kraków Airport, this investment is more than just a construction project. It represents a commitment to long-term growth, enhanced passenger experience, and alignment with modern aviation standards. The transformation of the former cargo terminal is a clear step toward preparing the airport for the future – one where capacity, functionality, and traveler comfort take center stage.
