Lufthansa Group is embracing AI to reduce food waste

Lufthansa Group Uses AI to Prevent Food Waste
The Lufthansa Group is introducing modern technology to reduce the amount of food discarded on board its aircraft. Thanks to innovative AI-based solutions such as "Tray Tracker" and "Pendle", the airline not only cares for the environment but also improves passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
"Tray Tracker" – Tray Analysis for the Future
One of the key tools is "Tray Tracker" – a mobile device using artificial intelligence to analyze returned meal trays during dishwashing. The system automatically detects whether a dish was fully eaten, partially consumed, or left untouched. It also considers data such as flight route, travel class, and menu concept.
Based on this information, Lufthansa can optimize portion sizes, menu selection, and even loading strategies. Moreover, avoiding food overloading helps reduce aircraft weight, which in turn lowers CO₂ emissions.
The system has been in operation in Frankfurt for almost a year, and has recently been rolled out in Munich. There are plans to expand the project to other Lufthansa Group locations and airlines.
"Pendle" – Predicting Demand with Algorithms
Another step toward intelligent food management on board is the "Pendle" project, developed by the Lufthansa Innovation Hub. This tool uses machine learning algorithms to forecast demand for specific meals. It analyzes data such as flight duration, route, and previous orders. In the future, both systems – "Tray Tracker" and "Pendle" – will be integrated into one comprehensive solution to combat food waste.
Informed Passenger Choices and More Eco-Friendly Products
In addition to technology, the Lufthansa Group is implementing practical solutions available to passengers. On short- and medium-haul flights with Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and SWISS, meals can be pre-ordered, ensuring availability of favorite dishes and minimizing overproduction. On the last flights of the day, passengers can take advantage of a "to go" offer, purchasing fresh products at a discounted price.
On intercontinental routes, Premium Class passengers can select their main course before departure, further helping to reduce food waste.
Importantly, Lufthansa Group is systematically replacing disposable plastic and aluminum items with more sustainable alternatives – since 2022, one-third of such items on board have already been replaced.
Less Waste, Lower Emissions, Greater Satisfaction
By combining cutting-edge technology with a mindful approach to loading and onboard service, Lufthansa Group is setting new standards in the aviation industry. Artificial intelligence, personalization, and environmental responsibility are shaping the future of air travel – more sustainable and more conscious.
