United Airlines with the largest mainline fleet in the world

United becomes the world's largest mainline fleet operator

United Airlines made history as the first carrier to reach 1,000 aircraft in its mainline fleet. This milestone is significant not only for the airline itself but also for the entire aviation industry. In January 2025, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 with the registration N77584 joined the fleet — a symbolic aircraft that marked United’s rise to global leadership in terms of directly operated aircraft.

Leader in the aviation market

As of May 2025, United’s mainline fleet had already reached 1,037 aircraft, placing the airline at the top of the global ranking. The fleet includes both narrow-body jets like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, and wide-body aircraft for intercontinental routes, including Dreamliners and, in future plans, Airbus A350s. This diversity makes United the largest long-haul carrier in North America.

What is a “mainline fleet”?

Unlike aircraft operated by regional partners, a mainline fleet consists of planes operated directly by the airline. This indicator is key for assessing the true size and operational capacity of an airline. In United’s case, surpassing 1,000 aircraft means taking the lead over other giants like American Airlines and Delta.

Innovation and comfort – benefits for passengers

The rapid fleet expansion brings tangible benefits to travelers. A larger number of aircraft means better access to routes, increased flight frequency, and more flexibility in route management. Passengers can expect to fly on modern Boeing 737 MAX jets and enjoy the comfort of Dreamliners on long-haul journeys.

Additionally, United is carrying out its ambitious “United Next” program, which aims to comprehensively upgrade cabin interiors. Plans include larger screens with Bluetooth functionality, redesigned overhead bins, and standardized onboard features across the fleet. In total, the airline has placed orders for over 700 new aircraft, including Airbus A321neo and XLR models, as well as additional Boeing 787s.

A new era in passenger aviation

United Airlines has not only achieved an impressive fleet size but is also setting new standards in service, fleet development, and route network expansion. It sends a strong signal to both the business and leisure travel sectors that investments in modernization and scale remain essential in global competition.
