Belgian icon: Brussels Airlines presents the Atomium.

Brussels Airlines Unveils New Aircraft Featuring Atomium Livery
For years, Brussels Airlines has successfully connected the world of aviation with Belgian culture, art, and sports through its unique "Belgian Icons" series. Each of these special aircraft honors a distinctive symbol of Belgium, and the newest addition to the fleet is a spectacular aircraft with a livery inspired by the Atomium – Brussels’ most famous architectural landmark.
A Contest Full of Creativity
The new Belgian Icon was created as part of the nationwide “Design your Belgian Icon” competition, which attracted over 900 entries from design enthusiasts. After a public vote, five designs were selected for the final round, judged by a panel of prominent figures from Belgian culture and sports. Among them were Sandra Kim (Eurovision winner), Alex Callier (Hooverphonic), cartoonist Philippe Geluck (creator of "Le Chat"), designer Gabrielle Szwarcenberg, and Brussels Airlines CEO Dorothea von Boxberg. The winning design by Thomas Faes from Faes Architecture is a modern interpretation of the Atomium’s nine spheres, symbolizing innovation and international collaboration. The livery not only impresses with its form but perfectly embodies the airline’s mission – “To represent the best of Belgium to the world.”
Atomium – More Than a Symbol
Originally built for Expo 58 in Brussels, the Atomium has remained one of Belgium’s most recognizable symbols and a manifestation of the spirit of progress. The new Belgian Icon takes this symbol to the skies, showcasing Belgian creativity, innovation, and heritage to the world. The Atomium-liveried aircraft becomes a “flying tribute” to this iconic structure and to Belgian creative thought.
The History of the Belgian Icons
The “Belgian Icons” series was launched in 2015 and has since captivated travelers from around the globe. Each aircraft serves as a mobile ambassador of culture, sport, or art.
Rackham – the first in the series, pays tribute to Tintin, the character created by Hergé, and is adorned with themes from the comic “Red Rackham’s Treasure”.
Trident – the official aircraft of Belgium’s national football teams, both the men’s (Red Devils) and women’s (Red Flames).
Amare – the latest icon before Atomium, was created in collaboration with the Tomorrowland music festival, symbolizing joy, unity, and musical emotion.
A Flying Gallery of National Pride
Through its Belgian Icons, Brussels Airlines connects the sky and the earth in an entirely new way. Each of these aircraft is not just a means of transport but also a symbol of national identity and Belgian pride – visible on runways and in skies around the world. The new Atomium livery not only catches the eye but also inspires – reminding us that Belgium is a country full of innovation, history, and creative energy that deserves to be shared with the world.
