Venice raises entry fees for tourists
From February 10, the authorities of Venice are introducing an increase in the entry fee for day-trip tourists. The rate will rise to 10 euros, twice as much as in 2024. This decision aims to better manage tourist traffic and protect the city from excessive strain.
The new regulations stipulate that the fee will be collected more frequently than before. In 2024, it applied on 29 days, while this year it will cover 54 days. The fee will be enforced from April 18 to May 4, and then every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from May until the end of July. It applies to tourists visiting the city without an overnight stay, between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Those who book at least four days in advance will avoid the price increase and pay the previous rate.
Until now, tourists visiting Venice without an overnight stay were required to pay a fee of 5 euros. This year, the amount will increase to 10 euros for those purchasing tickets less than four days before their arrival. However, bookings made in advance will still be subject to the previous rate. Visitors staying overnight in the city will remain exempt from the fee.
The fee system, introduced as a pilot program in 2024, has proven effective according to city officials and has garnered interest from other cities struggling with mass tourism. Revenue from the fees is intended to support infrastructure maintenance and the preservation of Venice’s cultural heritage. Last year, entry fees paid by day-trip tourists contributed 2.4 million euros to the city's budget.
Not all visitors are required to pay. Tourists staying overnight in Venice are exempt, provided they register online in advance. The fee also does not apply to those who are merely transferring at Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, or Stazione Marittima, nor to visitors traveling to the outer islands such as Lido, Murano, and Burano, as long as they do not pass through the city center.
