20th anniversary of Wizz Air in Poland
Wizz Air, the Hungarian airline, is celebrating its twentieth anniversary in Poland. The first commercial flight took place on May 19, 2004, from Katowice to London Luton, marking the inauguration of the airline's first base in Katowice. Exactly twenty years later, on May 19, 2024, the airline celebrated this milestone with passengers at Katowice Airport. During the ceremony, before the morning departure to Luton, passengers enjoyed a commemorative cake, and each traveler received a voucher worth 20 EUR to be used for future bookings with the airline.
Over two decades, Wizz Air has transported 25.5 million passengers through its Katowice network. This accounts for approximately 45% of the total number of passengers handled at Katowice Airport from 2004 to 2024. Currently, the airline bases five Airbus A320/A321 aircraft in Katowice and offers 26 routes to 18 countries during the "Summer 2024" season. Thanks to the infrastructure provided by Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze SA, which includes two hangars, Wizz Air performs technical maintenance of its fleet at Katowice Airport, carrying out line and hangar checks as well as quick engine changes.
Despite the celebrations and new routes, the airline also announced some reductions. Wizz Air plans to cut the number of flights on certain less popular routes in the coming months. This decision is driven by demand analysis and aims to optimize the route network, focusing on the most popular routes among passengers.
