PKP Intercity presented the final exterior design of its new Coradia Max double-deck trains on 30 September 2026. The first units are due to enter the fleet in 2029, with 42 trains expected by 2032. Alstom will build the trains in Poland.

42 trains worth PLN 4.1 billion

PKP Intercity ordered 42 Coradia Max electric multiple units, with an option for another 30. The base order for the trains is worth PLN 4.1 billion. Including 30 years of maintenance, the contract with Alstom is worth nearly PLN 6.9 billion.

Alstom will manufacture the trains at its Chorzów plant. The bogies will be produced in Nadarzyn near Warsaw. Production of the first test units is expected to begin in early 2027.

PKP Intercity has completed the exterior design. The trains retain the operator’s colour scheme, with changes to the livery layout and body details. Railway industry website Rynek Kolejowy reported that work on the interiors is continuing, with further visualisations expected later.

More than 550 seats in six cars

Each Coradia Max for PKP Intercity will have six cars. Four will be double-deck and the two middle cars will have a single level. Each train will have more than 550 seats and a maximum speed of 200 km/h.

The trains will include air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, reading lights and luggage racks. They will also have spaces for bicycles and pushchairs, quiet zones, family compartments and a bistro area.

The fleet will accommodate passengers with reduced mobility. Level boarding will be available from platforms 760 mm high. Automatic lifts will provide access from platforms at other heights.

Seven routes from Warsaw

PKP Intercity plans to use the double-deck trains on routes linking Warsaw with Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Wrocław, Kraków, Białystok and Terespol.

The capacity of more than 550 seats is intended for routes with high passenger demand. Coradia Max units will also be able to operate in pairs as two coupled trains.

More capacity on major business routes

For business travel, the planned deployment covers several of Poland’s main intercity corridors from Warsaw, including Kraków, Wrocław, Gdańsk and Łódź. Each six-car train will offer more than 550 seats, along with quiet zones and Wi-Fi.

The first trains are due to join the fleet in 2029. PKP Intercity expects to receive all 42 units from the base order by early 2032.
