New Direct Train Connection from Poland to Croatia – Comfortable Journey to the Adriatic with PKP Intercity

This summer, PKP Intercity will launch a new direct train service from Warsaw to Rijeka, Croatia – a response to the growing popularity of Croatia as a holiday destination among Polish travelers. The new route offers a convenient and affordable travel alternative, with ticket prices starting at around 200 PLN. Trains will operate four times a week.

The first departure is scheduled for Friday, June 27. Southbound trains will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, while return services from Rijeka will be available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The seasonal route will operate until the end of August, with the final departures from Warsaw and Rijeka on August 29 and 31, respectively.

The route spans over 1,200 kilometers and passes through five countries. Departing from Warsaw shortly after 2:00 PM, the train will stop at key stations including Opoczno, Katowice, Rybnik, and Chałupki. After crossing the Czech Republic, it will arrive in Vienna around 10:00 PM. Here, select carriages will be detached and continue toward Croatia as a separate train. After midnight in Slovenia, the train will be coupled with the overnight “Istria” service from Budapest to Rijeka. Early in the morning, the train will stop in Ljubljana, followed by stops in Postojna – known for its vast 20-kilometer cave system – and Opatija, a coastal town rich in Mediterranean vegetation and Austro-Hungarian heritage. The final destination, Rijeka, will be reached shortly after 9:00 AM.

Travelers can expect a high standard of comfort in air-conditioned carriages. The train will offer couchette cars with sleeping berths and standard second-class compartments. Between Warsaw and Vienna, a Wars dining car will serve freshly prepared meals. Passengers in couchette cars will receive a pillow, blanket, and sheet set, and will be assisted throughout the journey by a dedicated Wars staff member. The total seating capacity of the train is 172 passengers.

This international connection is the result of close cooperation between national railway operators from Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, and Hungary. The project also involved transport ministries from all countries along the route. The initiative by PKP Intercity represents a significant step toward sustainable international tourism and provides a competitive alternative to car or coach travel.
