Romania and Bulgaria formally enter the Schengen Zone

Romania and Bulgaria formally enter the Schengen Zone
In March 2024, Romania and Bulgaria formally enter the Schengen Zone, albeit with certain limitations only in maritime and air transport. However, this marks a step towards full freedom of movement, including in road traffic.

Both countries joined the European Union in 2007, but the Schengen Zone remained elusive for them. Now, from March next year, this situation undergoes a partial change.

For Polish travelers, especially those frequenting Bulgaria, this is significant news. In 2022, over 200,000 Poles chose this holiday destination, and the upward trend in tourism in Romania is also noticeable.

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, emphasizes that the upcoming March will be a historic moment for Bulgaria and Romania, a source of pride for their citizens. With no border controls on internal maritime and air boundaries, both countries take a crucial step toward full participation in the Schengen Zone. Von der Leyen congratulates them on this achievement, underscoring the role of hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

However, despite this progress, the European Commission stresses that discussions are ongoing regarding the potential abolition of controls on internal land borders. A decision by the Council on this matter is expected within reasonable time frames.

In supporting Bulgaria and Romania in safeguarding the Union's external borders, the EC ensures substantial financial support and Frontex assistance. The pilot projects of both countries on external borders have proven effective, prompting the need for their transformation into more structural solutions.
