PKP Intercity plans Strefa Grand for high-speed trains

PKP Intercity plans a four-seat Strefa Grand section for its future high-speed trains. The seats will rotate 180 degrees and recline electrically into a semi-reclined position. The requirements form part of the operator’s ongoing procurement process for the new trains.

Four seats behind the driver’s cab

Strefa Grand will sit in an end car, directly behind the driver’s cab. PKP Intercity specifies four seats in a 1+1 layout. The section will be separated from the rest of the train, sound-insulated and closed off by automatic doors.

Each seat will rotate 180 degrees. Electric adjustment will allow passengers to recline into a semi-reclined position, with calf support and an adjustable headrest. Both the seat and backrest will be 65 cm wide.

Tables sized for a 17-inch laptop

Each passenger will have an individual folding table large enough for a 17-inch laptop. A control panel at the seat will operate the seat position, lighting and electric window blinds.

The specification also calls for power sockets and chargers at every seat. Published information does not yet specify the fare or price for travelling in Strefa Grand.

Catering area near Strefa Grand

The new trains will have a separate catering area between first and second class. PKP Intercity plans both kitchen and dining areas, with a small galley near first class and Strefa Grand.

There is no confirmation that Strefa Grand passengers will receive a dedicated meal service. Available information describes the catering layout but does not set out service arrangements for the section.

Four-seat layout could suit business travel

A table sized for a 17-inch laptop, individual lighting and four seats in an enclosed section may also be relevant for business travellers. At this stage, however, PKP Intercity has not disclosed the price or sales rules for Strefa Grand.

The trains must reach at least 320 km/h under AC power. The base procurement covers 20 trainsets, with options that could increase the total to 55.
