Wizz Air to add Starlink internet on board
Wizz Air announced on 8 June 2026 that it will start rolling out Starlink connectivity on its aircraft from 2027. The carrier describes the plan as the first such move by a European ultra-low-cost airline. It has not yet said whether access will be free or what passengers will need to do to use the service.
Rollout starts in 2027
According to Wizz Air’s announcement, Starlink installations are due to begin in 2027. The airline says its new-generation aircraft are expected to be equipped with satellite connectivity.
That distinction matters. The announcement does not mean every Wizz Air flight will have working onboard internet from the start of 2027. Availability will depend on the installation schedule and on which aircraft have already received Starlink terminals.
Access terms still missing
Wizz Air has not disclosed the commercial terms of the service. It has not said whether Wi-Fi will be free, paid, linked to a Wizz Air account or offered through another access model.
For passengers, the technology announcement does not yet answer the practical question. The relevant details will come later, when travellers can check whether a specific aircraft and flight offer onboard connectivity.
Starlink targets lower latency
Starlink uses satellites in low Earth orbit. Compared with older satellite systems, that can reduce latency and support more stable inflight connectivity.
Current Starlink Help Center materials list Starlink Aviation download speeds at 135–310 Mbps, with peak speeds of up to 450 Mbps. Starlink also says latency is typically under 99 ms. These are service-level figures, not a guaranteed result on every Wizz Air flight.
Corporate travel needs the access rules
For business travel, speed is only part of the issue. Login terms, privacy rules and possible usage limits will matter just as much. Without those details, travel managers cannot yet assess whether Wizz Air’s onboard internet can support work during trips.
If the service becomes available on short European flights, it could support email, VPN, messaging tools and cloud work. In practice, that will depend on the access model, network terms and aircraft coverage.
More airlines are choosing Starlink
Wizz Air joins a growing list of airlines and airline groups that have adopted or announced Starlink. The list includes Lufthansa Group, IAG, United Airlines, Air France, Emirates, SAS and Virgin Atlantic.
The Wizz Air announcement is different because it sits in the European ultra-low-cost segment. These carriers usually keep the base fare narrow and charge separately for many extras. The main question is therefore not only the technology, but how Wizz Air will make it available to passengers.
