NFZ issues EHIC at Warsaw Chopin Airport

Poland’s National Health Fund runs a service point at Warsaw Chopin Airport where travelers can obtain a European Health Insurance Card free of charge. The card is printed on site after the traveler completes a form and NFZ confirms eligibility. The point is located in the public area C, on the departures level.

The point is near entrance C

The NFZ service point is in the publicly accessible part of the terminal, near entrance C and the departures area. Warsaw Chopin Airport says the point is open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 15:00.

Opening hours may change on public holidays. Travelers should check current information directly with the point or airport information before departure.

NFZ says travelers do not need an air ticket to use the point. Once eligibility is confirmed, the card is printed and issued on site.

The card covers the EU, EFTA and the UK

The European Health Insurance Card confirms the holder’s right to medically necessary and unplanned treatment during a temporary stay abroad. It applies in European Union countries, EFTA countries, namely Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Treatment is provided under the public healthcare rules of the country of stay. If local insured patients pay part of the cost for a service, an EHIC holder may have to pay the same charge.

The card is issued separately for each person. There is no single family EHIC.

Not all treatment is free

NFZ says EHIC covers medically necessary and unplanned care. This applies to cases that cannot wait until the traveler returns to Poland, such as sudden illness or an accident.

The card does not cover private healthcare. It is not a standard travel insurance policy and does not cover lost baggage, theft or private medical transport.

For travelers, EHIC is useful, but it should not be treated as full travel cover.

Validity depends on status

The validity period depends on the holder’s status. Employees and self-employed people usually receive an EHIC valid for 3 years.

Children and young people who are entitled to EHIC receive a card valid until their 18th birthday. Pensioners who have reached retirement age, 60 for women and 65 for men, may receive a card valid for 20 years.

Before printing the card, NFZ checks eligibility in its system. If the data is incomplete or out of date, the card may be issued for a shorter period.

EHIC does not replace corporate insurance

For business travel, EHIC can be part of the basic documentation for employees traveling to EU, EFTA countries or the UK. It does not replace corporate travel insurance or duty of care procedures.

For travel managers, the scope matters. EHIC works within public healthcare systems and under local rules, but it does not cover common travel risks such as private treatment, lost baggage or some repatriation costs.
